Ava DuVernay and the amazingly talented revolutionary that she is took to Twitter earlier this year to get a list of films by and about women of color. Then Twitter answered the call and IndieWire compiled a list of 85 Films By and About Women of Color. After high circulation of that list and some suggested titles, IndieWire has updated the list, which is now 115.
The update includes two of my favs that I noticed were not on the original list including, “I Can’t Think Straight” and “The World Unseen,” both written and directed by Shamim Sarif, a British South African-South Asian woman. Both films star Lisa Rani Ray, the Indo-Canadian actress and Sheetal Sheth, an American actress of Indian heritage. Their on screen chemistry is ridiculous and makes the duo one of my favorite pairings.
